Who can apply: The public, Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL).

Open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Prior primary wildland firefighting experience is a mandatory prerequisite, and eligible federal employees under CTAP or ICTAP get selection priority.

Experience: For GW-06, you need 1 year of wildland fire dispatch experience at the GW-05 level or higher, such as receiving fire reports and using dispatch computer programs. For GW-07, you need 1 year at the GW-06 level doing lead dispatch work, such as directing other dispatchers and choosing resource responses to incidents.

Education: For GW-06, one full year (18 semester hours) of graduate education directly related to the work can qualify, or a mix of experience and education with transcripts attached. The announcement does not list an education option for GW-07.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Valid state driver's license, held and maintained throughout employment

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 14 days (November 17, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: HR reviews resumes and documents to check minimum qualifications, and the USAJOBS questionnaire is also used. Interviews may be held at the hiring office's discretion and may be pass/fail; missing information or an incomplete resume can lead to an ineligible or not qualified rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Show months, days and hours per week for every firefighting and dispatch job, or that time may not count.
  • Keep the resume to two single-sided pages, 10-point minimum font and 0.5-inch margins; extra attachments will not be reviewed.
  • If you qualify with education, send transcripts by the closing date and be ready to show official copies if selected.
