Who can apply: The public.

Applications are accepted from any U.S. citizen or U.S. national. Veterans' preference does not apply to this vacancy.

Experience: You need six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience that is directly related to the job, both matching the GW-4 grade level. Specialized experience can include helping with filing and processing requests for equipment, personnel and supplies in a dispatch office or for wildland fire incidents. General experience can include farm or ranch work, greenhouse or landscaping work, or volunteer work at a park or fire department.

Education: Two years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in courses such as forestry, agriculture, range or wildlife management, soil science, natural resources, or wildland fire science can qualify you. No more than 3 semester hours of math count. You can also combine education and experience. The school must be accredited.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 9 days (November 12, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume is checked first to confirm you meet the minimum qualifications, then qualified applicants go to the selecting official. No rating or ranking is used, and veterans' preference does not apply. If you are found to have overstated your experience, your score may be lowered or you may be found ineligible.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Keep your resume to 2 pages or less, because longer resumes are removed from consideration
  • List dates, titles, grades and hours per week for each job, and show any dispatch or fire-related experience
  • Select the Location Negotiable option if you are willing to work at any listed location, and upload transcripts if you use education
