Who can apply: The public.
Open to any U.S. citizen or U.S. national. Job Corps graduates of fire-certified programs are encouraged to apply.
Experience: You need six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience at the GW-4 level. Specialized experience includes helping with equipment, personnel, and supply requests for wildland fire incidents, or filing and retrieving documents in a dispatch office. General experience can be any work that shows you can do this job, such as farm labor, greenhouse work, or volunteer work.
Education: Two years of college study with at least 12 semester hours in related subjects can qualify you. Related subjects include forestry, agriculture, natural resources, range or wildlife management, soil science, and wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours of math count. You can also combine education and experience.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 9 days (November 12, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your resume is checked against the minimum qualifications, and qualified applicants are sent to the selecting official. No rating or ranking is used, and veterans' preference does not apply. If you overstate your experience or qualifications, you may be found ineligible or removed.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume cannot exceed two pages, and applicants over that limit are removed from consideration.
- Show the hours per week and exact dates for each job on your resume, since the agency checks them.
- Upload files under 5MB in PDF, Word, or another listed format, and do not use encrypted files.
