Who can apply: The public.
The job is open to the public, but applicants must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Applicants are grouped by hiring preferences, such as military spouse, veteran, or transition hiring preference, and must prove any preference they claim.
Experience: You need progressively responsible experience in quantity cooking, menu planning, food quality and cost control, food inventory and storage, and buying food and equipment. The experience must include supervising staff, and you must know dietetics, culinary planning, and portion control. The announcement does not give a grade level for this experience.
Education: Education can be used in place of experience for this job. Education from a foreign school must be shown to be equal to a U.S. education, and you must provide that proof yourself.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 87 days (January 29, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers are compared to the qualifications. If you are minimally qualified, your resume is compared to your questionnaire answers to check your experience level. Applicants whose resume is found to overstate their experience may lose consideration, and incomplete or incorrect applications may affect eligibility.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must clearly show supervising staff and experience in cooking, menu planning, food costs, and inventory.
- Send transcripts if you qualify through education, and proof of any preference you claim, or your application will be incomplete.
- Make sure you can provide a REAL ID or approved base access documents before applying.
