1 Check you can apply You are here

Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. You must be able to prove U.S. citizenship.

Experience: Your experience must match the grade you apply for, and the announcement lists requirements for GS-04 through GS-11. Specialized experience means past work that shows you can do this job; for GS-11, that means one year of independently building 3D models on multiple platforms with very basic instructions, reviewing others' work, mentoring, and leading technicians on multi-discipline projects.

Education: Two years of education above high school can qualify you for GS-04. A four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree can qualify you for GS-05. The announcement lists education only for these two grades. Foreign education must be evaluated by a recognized private evaluator or receive full credit from a U.S. accredited school.

Licenses and certifications:

  • State-issued driver's license, which you must be able to obtain and keep

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 27 days (November 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application package, including your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers, is reviewed to see if you meet the qualifications. Missing information, a resume over two pages, or inflated qualifications can make you ineligible or cost you consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Show hours per week for each job on your resume, or your application may be marked incomplete.
  • Keep your resume to two pages or less, or it will be removed from consideration.
  • If you qualify through education, upload your transcripts with your application or you will be rated ineligible.
