Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. Veterans' preference does not apply under this hiring authority.

Experience: You need at least 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the ND-04 (GS-12/13 equivalent) level, in federal service or in the private or public sector. The experience must include work as a professional engineer on complex technical projects, mentoring, writing technical reports, and giving briefings.

Education: Education is required in addition to experience. You can meet it with an engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program, or with a degree that includes enough calculus and engineering science courses. Other options include current Engineer Intern or Engineer in Training registration, a Professional Engineer license, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, 60 semester hours of qualifying courses, or a science degree plus at least 1 year of professional engineering experience.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 2 days (November 5, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on your resume and supporting documents against the listed qualifications. If it is found you inflated your experience or qualifications, you may be found not qualified, and missing information can lead to an ineligible rating. Qualified applicants go to the hiring manager, who may hold interviews.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Sensitive Compartmented Information), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Keep your resume to 2 pages or fewer, and show dates by month and year for every job.
  • If you qualify using education, include a transcript or course list with your application.
  • Submit the complete package through the online link by the close date, since incomplete packages are rated ineligible.
