Who can apply: The public.
Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. The job is open to the public.
Experience: Your experience must match the grade level one step below the job you want, and your resume must show it. For GS-04, you need one year of general experience at the GS-03 level plus specialized experience such as operating radios, receiving calls, and keeping logs. For GS-05 to GS-07, you need one year of specialized emergency dispatch experience at the grade below, including computer dispatch systems and taking information from callers.
Education: At GS-04 and GS-05, education can count in place of some experience. GS-04 requires two years of education above high school, and GS-05 requires four years, each combined with experience to meet the full requirement.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current Telecommunicator 1 certification
- Current CPR certification
- Current APCO or IAED EMD certification
- Current DoD HAZMAT Awareness certification
- Current communications training officer (CTO) certification
- Current CIC/NCIC/OPENFOX operator certification
- Current valid United States driver's license

3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 349 days (October 12, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your resume and supporting documents are rated against the job requirements. Qualified applicants are referred to the hiring manager, who may interview them. If you overstate your experience or send an incomplete package, you may be found ineligible.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.
