Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Males must be registered for Selective Service.

Experience: You need at least 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the next lower level, NH-02, which equals GS-11. Specialized experience means applying in-depth electronics engineering knowledge to analyze, design, develop, test, or maintain electronic communication systems. Unpaid, part-time, and volunteer experience can count if you list duties and hours per week.

Education: A bachelor's degree (or higher) in engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or a program with calculus and at least five listed engineering science or physics areas. You can also combine college-level education, training, and technical experience that shows strong knowledge of engineering. Education cannot replace experience at this grade.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 57 days (December 24, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

The announcement says it may close at any time, so apply as soon as you can. It also may create a 120-day list for filling similar jobs.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application package, including your resume, questionnaire, and documents, will be rated for eligibility, qualifications, and quality. Your questionnaire answers must match your documents, or you will be rated not qualified or insufficient information. Missing or incorrect information can lower your rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Make sure your resume shows dates and hours per week for each job, or your application may be marked insufficient.
  • Send transcripts with your application if you use your education to qualify.
  • Keep your questionnaire answers consistent with your resume and documents.
