Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. The job is open to the public.

Experience: You need at least 1 year of paid or unpaid experience at the next lower grade level (GG-12) that shows the skills needed for this job. The experience must include architecting, developing, or changing highly complex custom electronic parts, leading teams and managing work with partners such as private companies, or writing complex test procedures for advanced electronics or automated test equipment.

Education: An engineering degree can qualify you. The degree must be from an engineering program accredited by ABET, or it must include calculus and at least five of seven listed engineering science areas (such as statistics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, or electrical circuits). You can also qualify with a mix of education and experience, shown by professional engineer registration, a written test, specific courses, or a related curriculum, plus a supervisor letter confirming you did professional engineering work. Schools must be accredited by a body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, and foreign degrees must be evaluated by NACES.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes today (November 4, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume and documents are reviewed and compared with your questionnaire answers to decide if you are qualified. Rated on planning and evaluating, telecommunications planning and system design, troubleshooting electronic equipment, project management, and technical competence. If you appear to have overstated your qualifications, you may lose consideration, and errors or missing information can lower your rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Sensitive Compartmented Information), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must list month and year start and end dates for each job, plus hours worked per week.
  • If you use education to qualify, include all transcripts, or you may be rated ineligible.
  • Upload your DD-214 with your application if you claim veterans' preference.
