Who can apply: The public.

Any U.S. citizen can apply, and you must give proof of U.S. citizenship. Veterans' preference does not apply to this vacancy.

Experience: You need one year of specialized experience at about the GS-11 level. This means analyzing electrical specifications to match operational needs, finding operational conflicts in system processes, changing specifications when standard engineering methods fall short, and giving technical advice to solve unique engineering problems.

Education: You can qualify with a bachelor's degree in engineering from a program accredited by ABET, or a degree with enough calculus and science courses. You can also qualify with a mix of education and experience, such as an engineering license or intern registration, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, or 60 semester hours of specified courses. Education cannot replace experience at this grade.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 9 days (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

This job will close once 50 applications are received, which may happen before the closing date of 11/06/2026 at 11:59 PM EST.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications, using your resume, your online questionnaire answers, and your supporting documents. Missing information or errors may affect your eligibility. If the agency finds you have inflated your qualifications, you may lose consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Keep your resume to two pages or less, because any pages after the second will not be reviewed.
  • For each job on your resume, list the number of hours you worked per week, or your application may be marked incomplete.
  • Education cannot replace experience at this grade, so your resume must clearly show the specialized experience listed in the announcement.
