Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. The agency has confirmed it is open to all U.S. citizens.

Experience: You need at least 1 full year of specialized experience at the GS-4 level or higher in the federal sector to qualify at GS-5. Specialized experience means work that built the skills for this job, such as classroom teaching in a child development setting, keeping facilities safe and clean, applying child care policies, or helping with staff training; paid and unpaid work, including volunteer work, counts.

Education: Four years of education above high school can qualify you instead of experience. You can also combine education and experience to meet 100% of the requirements. Education can be substituted for experience at this grade level, and this position does not have a set education requirement.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Valid state driver's license (you must be able to obtain and keep one)

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 6 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume and documents are first checked to see if you meet the minimum qualifications. Qualified applicants are rated Best-Qualified, Well-Qualified, or Qualified based on experience, education, training, and any assessments, including skills such as customer service, teamwork, and integrity. Overstating your qualifications or cheating on an assessment can get you removed from consideration.

Apply on USAJOBS ↗
4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Keep your resume to 2 pages or less, since the system will not accept longer resumes.
  • Show start and end dates (mm/yy to mm/yy) and hours per week for each job or volunteer role.
  • If you qualify through education, submit unofficial transcripts by the closing date or you will be disqualified.
