Who can apply: The public, Senior executives.
The job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. Applicants should be senior executives who meet the five Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs). Veterans' preference does not apply to this job.
Experience: You need one year of specialized experience at a level close to this job, plus progressively responsible leadership experience. The announcement also expects significant experience giving legal advice at EPA, another federal, state, or local agency, or in private practice.
Education: You must have a J.D. or LL.M. degree from an accredited law school, or equivalent apprentice experience allowed under state law.
Licenses and certifications:
- Licensed to practice law in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia
- Active member in good standing of a U.S. bar (must be done before starting work, not at application)
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 12 days (November 16, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Human Resources first checks basic qualifications. Then a three-member panel of SES members rates your resume against the ECQs and TQ 1, and the best-qualified applicants may be sent to the selecting official. Resumes over 2 pages, or missing any ECQ or TQ, lead to disqualification, and exaggerated or false information can also disqualify you.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Top Secret), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your 2-page resume must clearly address all five ECQs and TQ 1, or your application can be disqualified.
- Upload a law school transcript or course list with your application, since official transcripts are needed only before you start.
- You do not need bar admission to apply, but you must be licensed and an active bar member before starting work.
Kandidatu is an independent website: only the official posting counts. Read it before you apply.
