Who can apply: The public.

You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. The job is open to the public.

Experience: For GS-9 level, you need at least 1 year of experience at the next lower level, or a Master's degree. For GS-11 level, you need at least 1 year of experience as a registered dietitian at the next lower level. The announcement prefers 2 to 5 years of dietitian work in an acute care hospital setting. Describe your experience clearly and specifically, because the agency will verify it.

Education: A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college is needed for the non-credentialed exception at GS-7 and GS-9. A Master's degree from an accredited university can count for the GS-9 experience requirement. Foreign degrees must be evaluated by ACEND. Education cannot replace experience at GS-11.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD) credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), unless using the GS-7 or GS-9 exception

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 6 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your online occupational questionnaire and your submitted documents. Your experience and other information will be verified, and reference checks may be done. Errors or missing information can lower your rating or make you ineligible.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Submit a long-form resume or CV that shows dates and hours per week for each job; the 2-page resume limit does not apply to this position.
  • If you use education to qualify, send official transcripts from accredited schools, and foreign degrees need a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency.
  • Veterans must claim preference in the questionnaire and upload DD-214 documents, or the preference will not be awarded.
