Who can apply: The public.
Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. may apply. You must prove U.S. citizenship. Veterans and military spouses are considered along with all other candidates.
Experience: You need 1 year of specialized experience. This means routine x-ray imaging for patients of all ages, setting up and checking x-ray equipment, positioning patients, and keeping accurate patient images and records. The announcement says this experience is typical of GS-6 work, one level below this GS-7 job.
Education: You can qualify with one full year of graduate-level education directly related to this work, such as diagnostic radiology or radiography. You can also combine education and experience. Your combined total must reach 100%: divide months of experience by 12, divide graduate semester hours by 18, and add the two results. Education from foreign schools must be evaluated by a recognized private evaluator or given full U.S. credit.
Licenses and certifications:
- Registered technologist (position requires registered technologists)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 174 days (April 19, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your full application package is reviewed, including your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers, to see if you meet the qualifications. Missing or incomplete documents can make your application incomplete or rate you ineligible. If the agency finds you have inflated your experience, you may lose consideration.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Keep your resume to two pages or less, and list hours per week for each job or your application may be rejected.
- If you use education to qualify, send transcripts from schools accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accreditor.
- Upload a copy of your radiologic technologist license or certification with your application, or you will be rated ineligible.
