Who can apply: The public.
This job is open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Non-citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens cannot be recruited.
Experience: You must have completed, or be currently completing, a residency program in general practice or a specialty. Or you must have comparable experience as a dentist actively treating medically compromised patients.
Education: You need a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from an approved dental school. Approved schools include U.S. and Canadian schools accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and certain schools accepted by a state licensing body. Foreign schools may qualify if they meet the state licensing requirements.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia, or will hold one
- Maintain state registration if the state requires it to keep your license active
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 57 days (December 31, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
The first referral cut-off date is November 6, 2026, and applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals until the position is filled.
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications listed. Your application, resume, CV, and supporting documents will be verified, and errors or omissions may affect your consideration.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must be a long-form resume or CV; the two-page resume limit does not apply to this job.
- Make sure your dental license is current and unrestricted, and include the degree details and school accreditation on your application.
- If you claim veterans' preference, select it in the online questionnaire and attach your DD-214 and any other required proof before the 11:59 PM ET deadline on 12/31/2026.
