What you would do
- Perform dental hygiene procedures on patients, with or without numbing medicine.
- Care for patients who are medically, physically, or mentally compromised or fearful of dental work.
- Plan and carry out patient treatment, working with medical and dental staff as needed.
- Give numbing medicine and do deep gum cleaning, root planing, and subgingival curettage.
- Take patients' blood pressure and record it in their dental health records.
- Write treatment plans in dental records, including the order of appointments needed.
Do you qualify for GS-7?
With experience: You need 1 year of specialized experience at about the GS-6 level. This means prophylactic dental procedures, oral examinations, and performing or reading routine x-rays.
With education: Education cannot replace experience at this grade.
Licenses and certifications you need:
- Current license to practice as a dental hygienist in a U.S. state, territory, or D.C.
- Radiology (x-ray) credential as a certified radiographer, meeting federal standards
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association
