1 Check you can apply You are here

Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. You must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.

Experience: You need 1 year of specialized experience typical of GS-9 work. This means conducting quality control or microscopic diagnosis on cytology specimens, maintaining cytology equipment, and preparing diagnostic reports. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, counts.

Education: You need a bachelor's or higher degree with major study in a medical, health sciences, or allied sciences field, from a program accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized body. You can also qualify with a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of graduate study toward one in a related field such as cytotechnology. You can combine education and experience if the total reaches at least 100%, computed by dividing months of experience by 12 and graduate semester hours beyond 36 by 18, then adding the two percentages.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Valid ASCP Board of Certification Cytology (CT or SCT), highly desired
  • Valid thin-prep certification, highly desired
  • The announcement also says a job-related license or certification must be submitted with your application, so confirm which applies

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 2 days (October 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application is rated on how well your resume, supporting documents, and online questionnaire show you meet the qualifications. If your application shows inflated qualifications or experience, you may lose consideration, and errors or missing information may affect your eligibility.

Apply on USAJOBS ↗
4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must be two pages or less and must list hours worked per week for each job, plus start and end month and year.
  • If you qualify through education, upload transcripts; if you rely on a certification, upload a copy, or you will be rated ineligible.
  • The application closes at 11:59 PM EST on 10/30/2026, and you must re-select supporting documents in the online application.
