Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public. U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply, as can non-U.S. nationals who have lived in the U.S. or a U.S. territory for at least three continuous years before starting federal work. Citizens of NATO countries other than Germany are also eligible for employment under U.S. conditions in Europe.

Experience: You need at least 24 months of experience working in group programs with children or youth, plus knowledge of child and youth development theories. At least 12 of those months must be experience managing an entire cycle of operations at a child, youth, or school services facility, including budgeting, facility management, supply management, program development, curriculum oversight, hiring, training, and supervising staff.

Education: A bachelor's or higher degree in child development, early childhood education, elementary or secondary education, home economics, special education, or another field that fits the position. For school-age facilities, any of these fields counts. General education courses do not count, and the school must be accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accrediting body.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current CPR certification
  • Current First Aid certification
  • Current Food Handlers certification

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 8 days (November 11, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your answers to the online questionnaire are checked first for basic qualifications. HR then reviews your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers against the job requirements. Missing information or skipped steps can lead to an ineligible rating, and overstated experience can affect your consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Make sure your two-page resume clearly shows the 24 months and 12 months of required experience
  • Attach transcripts or diplomas, since proof of education is required at the time of application
  • Complete every questionnaire question, because missing answers can result in an ineligible rating
