Who can apply: Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL), The public.
The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national, or owe allegiance to the U.S. Federal employees whose job was eliminated may get priority under career transition programs (CTAP, RPL, or ICTAP).
Experience: For GS-5, you need at least 52 weeks of experience with food or other items people consume, such as meat, poultry, fish, or eggs. Useful jobs include food inspector, inspection aide, or quality inspection specialist. GS-7 requires one year at the GS-5 level plus 52 weeks of independent work, and GS-8 and GS-9 require more experience at the level below.
Education: For GS-5, a full 4-year bachelor's degree with major study, or at least 24 semester hours in agricultural, biological, or physical sciences, food technology, epidemiology, home economics, pharmacy, engineering, or nutrition, can qualify you. You can also combine education with experience. For GS-7 and GS-9, directly related graduate study can count.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes tomorrow (November 4, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Applicants are placed in Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified categories based on experience quality and competencies such as attention to detail, decision making, dependability, flexibility, interpersonal skills, resilience, and self management. Your resume must clearly support your online Assessment Questionnaire answers, and inflated or inaccurate information can lower your rating or lead to removal.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must show hours per week, dates, and title, series, and grade for each past job, and stay within 2 pages
- Describe sampling, testing, and reporting work in detail to match the GS-5 experience standard
- If you use education, upload transcripts with your name and course details, and keep official copies ready for selection
