Who can apply: Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL), The public.

The job is open to the public, but applicants must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Current or former federal employees with CTAP, RPL, or ICTAP priority, and eligible veterans, may get selection priority.

Experience: You need at least 52 weeks of paid or unpaid experience with food or other items for human consumption, such as meat, poultry, eggs, or pharmaceuticals, at the GS-5 level. Higher grades need more: GS-7 adds independent routine work, GS-8 adds work with federal meat, poultry, and egg product laws, and GS-9 needs one year at the GS-8 level.

Education: For GS-5, a full 4-year bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester credits in agricultural, biological, or physical sciences, food technology, epidemiology, home economics, pharmacy, engineering, or nutrition. You can also combine education beyond the first 60 semester hours with experience. For GS-7, one full year of directly related graduate study. For GS-9, two years of directly related graduate study or a directly related master's degree.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes tomorrow (November 4, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application and online Assessment Questionnaire are first checked for minimum qualifications, and your resume must support your answers. Qualified applicants are placed in Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified categories based on the quality of their experience and these skills: attention to detail, decision making, dependability, flexibility, interpersonal skills, resilience, and self-management. Missing details or overstated experience can lower your rating.

Apply on USAJOBS ↗
4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Keep your resume to 2 pages and list hours per week and exact dates for each job, since missing details can lower your rating.
  • Show inspection, sampling, or food safety work in your resume at the grade level you are applying for.
  • Upload college transcripts if you use education to qualify, and a DD-214 if you claim veterans' preference.
