Who can apply: Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL), The public.
Open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national, or owe allegiance to the U.S. Federal employees whose job or agency was eliminated may get priority under career transition programs (CTAP, RPL, or ICTAP).
Experience: You need at least 52 weeks of experience with food or other products for people to eat, such as meat, poultry, fish, or eggs. Experience like food inspection, public health inspection, or quality inspection can count. Higher grades (GS-7 to GS-9) require more years of experience at the grade below, and GS-8 and GS-9 also ask for work with meat and poultry laws and HACCP principles.
Education: A bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours in agricultural, biological, or physical sciences, food technology, epidemiology, nutrition, or related fields can qualify you for GS-5. For GS-7, one year of directly related graduate education can qualify. For GS-9, two years of directly related graduate education or a related master's degree can qualify. Education can also be combined with experience.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 9 days (November 12, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Applicants are placed in Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified categories based on the quality of their experience and seven competencies: attention to detail, decision making, dependability, flexibility, interpersonal skills, resilience, and self management. Your resume must support your answers to the online Assessment Questionnaire, and inflated or unclear claims can lower your rating.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must show dates, hours per week, and duties for each job, and it cannot go over 2 pages.
- Describe examples such as taking samples, running field tests, writing reports, and discussing findings with others.
- If you use education to qualify, upload unofficial transcripts with your application.
