Who can apply: The public.
Only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and those who owe allegiance to the U.S. may apply. You must prove U.S. citizenship. Veterans and military spouses are considered along with all other candidates.
Experience: You need one year of specialized experience at the next lower level (GS-12). This means work that includes conducting mental health assessments, providing individual and group treatment, and working as part of a multidisciplinary team. Your resume must clearly describe this experience.
Education: You need a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) directly related to full professional work in clinical psychology. Education cannot replace experience at this grade. Foreign degrees must be evaluated by a recognized private evaluation organization or receive full credit at a U.S. accredited school.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current, active, valid, unrestricted clinical license to practice psychology independently from a U.S. state, District of Columbia, commonwealth, territory, or jurisdiction
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 177 days (April 29, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
This is an open continuous announcement. Applications are evaluated at cut-off dates, with the first on 1 December 2026 and later cut-offs on the first day of each month.
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You will be rated on how well your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers meet the qualification requirements. If you inflate your experience or qualifications, you may lose consideration. An incomplete application package, or missing transcripts or license, can result in an ineligible rating.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must be two pages or less and must show hours per week and month-and-year dates for each job, or it may be marked incomplete
- Upload a copy of your transcript and your clinical psychology license with your application, or you will be rated ineligible
- Education cannot replace experience, so your resume must clearly show one year of mental health assessment, treatment, and team work at the GS-12 level
