Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S.

Experience: For the GS-7 level, you need 1 year of specialized experience at least equal to GS-5 level. For the GS-9 level, you need 1 year at least equal to GS-7 level. Examples include administrative support for a clinical area, collecting and analyzing data, coordinating daily clinic coverage, monitoring training, and preparing reports. GS-9 also counts managing special projects.

Education: A bachelor's degree with coursework that matches the job can qualify you at GS-7 through Superior Academic Achievement, such as a GPA of 3.0 or higher, the top third of your class, a B+ (3.5) in your major, or a national honor society. One full year of graduate education can replace the GS-7 experience requirement. For GS-9, two full years of graduate education, a master's or equivalent graduate degree, or a law degree (LL.B. or J.D.) if related can replace experience. You can also combine graduate education and experience. A transcript is required, and the school must be accredited and recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes tomorrow (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Applicants are placed in quality categories from Best Qualified to Qualified based on the resume and questionnaire. You must also meet the cut score on the online USA Hire assessment. Overstating your experience or cheating on the assessment can get you removed from consideration.

Apply on USAJOBS ↗
4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • List job titles, duties, month and year dates, and hours per week for every job on your resume, or it may not count.
  • If you use education to qualify, send your transcript, since many applicants forget it.
  • Keep your resume to two pages or less, or you will be ruled ineligible.
