Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. may apply. You must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.

Experience: For GS-11, you need 1 year of specialized experience designing structural parts to engineering codes, reviewing drawings and design data, and doing on-site assessments with reports for senior engineers. For GS-12, you need 1 year of experience designing structural elements, reviewing drawings and design data, and doing site assessments for senior engineers.

Education: You must meet a basic engineering requirement: a bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or a state engineer license (EI, EIT, or PE), or passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, or other listed coursework or degree options. For GS-11, a Ph.D. in civil engineering or 3 years of graduate study toward one also qualifies. Education cannot replace experience at the GS-12 level.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 6 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application is checked against the minimum qualifications using your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers. Incomplete packages or inflated qualifications can lead to ineligibility or removal from consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Keep your resume to two pages or less, or it will be removed from consideration.
  • Give month and year dates and hours per week for each job, or your application may be incomplete.
  • If you qualify with education, attach transcripts or you will be rated ineligible.
