Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen or national. Bargaining unit position (AFGE Local 421) with a union.

Experience: You need one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 level. Specialized experience means performing dam safety inspections, conducting engineering analyses of dams, and taking part in Part 12D Comprehensive Assessments or similar procedures used by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Reclamation, or Tennessee Valley Authority.

Education: This job has an education requirement, so you must submit transcripts and list your degree type and major. The announcement does not name the specific degree; check the Civil Engineer (GS-0810) qualification page linked in the announcement. Schools must be accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accrediting body.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current professional engineer (PE) license or registration in any U.S. state, D.C., Guam, or a U.S. territory

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 2 days (November 5, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well your resume, questionnaire answers, and assessments show you meet the qualifications. Failing the selective factor (the PE license) means you will not be considered further, and overstating your experience or cheating on an assessment can get you removed.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Attach a copy of your professional engineer license, or you may fail the selective factor.
  • Your resume must be 2 pages or fewer and show the dates and hours per week for each job.
  • Submit your transcripts with your application, or it will be marked incomplete.
