Who can apply: The public.

Open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. You must be at least 18 years old.

Experience: Entry level (CY-1702-01) needs no experience, but prior work with children or youth is preferred. Intermediate level (CY-1702-01) needs 6 months of experience working with children or youth in a child and youth setting. Target level (CY-1702-02) needs 1 year of that same kind of experience.

Education: Every level needs a high school diploma or equivalent. Intermediate level also needs completion of Navy Entry Level training (Army, Air Force, and Marine equivalents are accepted). Target level also needs one of these: completion of DoD standardized training courses; a valid Child Development Associate (CDA) or Military School-Age (MSA) credential; or a 2-year degree in a related field such as Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Youth Recreation, or Elementary or Secondary Education.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 25 days (November 28, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume is first checked for eligibility, then rated on knowledge, skills, and abilities using a set scoring guide. Applicants are referred to the hiring manager for the grade level they qualify for, and interviews may be held.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume is limited to two pages, and the system blocks longer uploads.
  • Upload your transcript or diploma with your application, since it is required and missing items can delay consideration.
  • List your child or youth work with exact dates and months, because the rating depends on the experience your resume shows.
