Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen or a legal U.S. resident for at least 3 years, and you must live in or near the area named in the announcement. Hiring preferences, such as for military spouses and veterans, may apply, and you must prove any preference you claim.

Experience: All levels require you to be at least 18, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and communicate well in English. Target level needs 12 months of paid or unpaid childcare or youth program experience (including volunteer work) plus knowledge of child and youth development; intermediate level needs 6 months of group program experience with children or youth; entry level needs no experience.

Education: Education can substitute for experience at this position. Target level accepts DoW-approved competency training, a Child Development Associate (CDA) or similar nationally recognized credential, or at least 12 semester hours of coursework in the age group served. Intermediate level accepts completion of Air Force entry-level training, equivalent industry childcare training, or at least 6 semester hours in early childhood, elementary or secondary education, child and youth development, or special education.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Food Handlers certification, completed within a set time after hire

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 9 days (November 13, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers are reviewed to check whether you meet the minimum qualifications. If you are minimally qualified, your resume is compared with your questionnaire answers to decide your experience level. If your answers are found to be inflated, you may lose consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must clearly describe your childcare or youth work, including dates and hours per week, because experience is judged from it.
  • Include proof of any education, credential, or preference you claim, such as transcripts or a DD-214, or your application will be incomplete.
  • Confirm you have a REAL ID or another approved ID for base access before you apply.
