Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, a national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Applicants may also claim preferences, such as military spouse, outside applicant veteran, spouse, widow or parent of a veteran, or transition hiring preference.

Experience: Everyone must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and communicate well in English. Entry level needs no experience, intermediate level needs 6 months of experience equivalent to CY-01 Entry Level in a group program for children or youth, and target level needs 12 months of experience in a childcare or youth program plus knowledge of child or youth development.

Education: Education can be used instead of experience for this job. Intermediate level accepts 6 semester hours of college credit in early childhood, elementary or secondary education, child and youth development, or special education, or completed Entry Level DoW (Department of War) training or equivalent childcare certification. Target level accepts 12 semester hours of directly related coursework from an accredited college, a Child Development Associate (CDA) or other recognized child or youth development credential, or completed DoW competency-based training. Schools must be accredited by an accreditor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, and foreign education needs proof that it is equivalent to U.S. education.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 57 days (December 31, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume, supporting documents and questionnaire answers are checked against the minimum qualifications. If you meet them, your resume and documents are compared with your questionnaire answers to set your experience level, and inflated answers or missing information can cost you consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Upload transcripts if you qualify through education, and proof of any preference you claim, or your application will be incomplete.
  • Describe your childcare or youth program work clearly in your resume, including volunteer work, since it counts toward experience.
  • Make sure your resume matches your questionnaire answers, because reviewers compare the two.
