Who can apply: The public.
Open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S.
Experience: Intermediate level (CY-1 grade) requires 6 months of experience working with children or youth in a child and youth setting. Target level (CY-2 grade) requires 1 year of the same kind of experience. Entry level has no experience requirement, but prior experience with children or youth is preferred.
Education: Every level requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Intermediate level also requires completing the Navy Entry Level training (Army, Air Force, and Marine equivalents are accepted). Target level also requires one of these: completion of DoD standardized training courses, a valid Child Development Associate (CDA) or Military School-Age (MSA) credential, or a 2-year degree in early childhood education, child development, youth recreation, physical education, elementary or secondary education, youth development, or a related field.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 58 days (December 31, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your resume is first checked against the minimum requirements. Qualified resumes are then rated on knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs), and applicants are referred to the hiring manager for the grade they qualify for. The selecting official may also interview applicants.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Keep your resume to two pages; the system blocks longer files.
- Describe your child or youth work experience clearly, because ratings depend on what your resume shows.
- Attach a diploma or transcript showing your name, school, degree, date, and major, and do not submit altered transcripts.
