Who can apply: The public.

Open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the United States.

Experience: Entry level (CY 1) has no set experience requirement, though prior work with children is preferred. Intermediate level needs 6 months of experience working with children or youth in a child and youth setting. Target level (CY 2) needs 1 year of experience working with children or youth in a child and youth setting.

Education: You must be at least 18 with a high school diploma or GED. For the CY 2 target level, you also need one of these: completion of DoD standardized training courses, a valid Child Development Associate (CDA) or Military School-Age (MSA) credential, or a 2-year degree in a related field such as Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Youth Recreation, Physical Education, Elementary or Secondary Education, or Youth Development. The intermediate level also requires completing Navy Entry Level training (Army, Air Force, and Marine equivalents are accepted).

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 25 days (November 28, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Resumes are first checked for basic eligibility, then rated on knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) using a set rating scale. Applicants are referred to the hiring manager for the grade level they qualify for, and the selecting official may interview candidates.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Be clear and specific about your child and youth experience and your KSAs, since the announcement asks for this.
  • Send proof of education with your application: a transcript showing the degree and date, or your high school diploma or GED. Transcripts must show your name, school, degree type, date, and major.
  • Your resume must fit within two pages, and the system blocks longer uploads.
