Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the United States.

Experience: Entry level needs no experience, but prior work with children or youth is preferred. The Intermediate level (CY-1702-01) needs 6 months of experience working with children or youth in a child and youth setting. The Target level (CY-1702-02) needs 1 year of that experience.

Education: Entry level needs a high school diploma or equivalent and age 18 or older. Intermediate level needs a high school diploma plus completion of Navy Entry Level training (Army, Air Force, and Marine equivalents are accepted). Target level needs a high school diploma plus one of these: completion of DoD standardized training courses; a valid Child Development Associate (CDA) or Military School-Age (MSA) credential; or a minimum 2-year degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Youth Recreation, Physical Education, Elementary or Secondary Education, Youth Development, or a related Pre-K or Primary Education field.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 27 days (November 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: All resumes are checked first to see if you meet the requirements. Qualified resumes are rated on your knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) using set criteria, and you are referred for the grade level you qualify for. The selecting official may choose to interview applicants.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must be two pages or less, or the system will not let you submit it.
  • Describe your work with children or youth clearly, with dates and hours per week, since the resume is rated on experience.
  • Send a transcript or diploma with the required details, and remember that the online questionnaire must also be completed.
