Who can apply: The public.
The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Applicants may also qualify under preferences such as military spouse preference, outside applicant veteran, transition hiring preference, or business based action, but proof is required.
Experience: You need at least 18 months of experience working in a childcare or youth program, plus completion of required competency-based training documented by the Service. Other options combine 12 to 18 months of group program experience with a credential or education listed below.
Education: Education can substitute for some experience. Options include an associate degree or 60 semester hours of college coursework, with 24 semester hours in child development, youth development, education, recreation, or a closely related field, plus 12 months of group program experience. A bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours in a related field plus 12 months of group program experience also qualifies. Education must come from schools accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accreditor, and foreign education must be shown to be equivalent. A high school diploma or GED is also required.
Licenses and certifications:
- Food Handler's Certificate, to be obtained within the required training time
- Valid driver's license with a good driving record, if required to transport children
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 63 days (December 31, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
Applicants are pulled every Friday at 8:00 AM until the positions are filled, so the announcement may fill before the 12/31/2026 closing date.
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your application is first checked against the minimum qualifications, then your resume and documents are compared with your questionnaire answers to rate your experience. If you are found to have inflated your answers, you may lose consideration, and errors or missing information may affect your eligibility.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must clearly show your relevant childcare or youth program experience, since it is used to judge your qualifications.
- If you qualify through education, send transcripts from accredited schools and include all required documents by 11:59 PM EST on 12/31/2026.
- Include the proof required for any preference you claim, such as a DD-214 for veterans, or it may not be counted.
