Who can apply: The public.

Open to U.S. citizens, nationals, and those who owe allegiance to the U.S. Applicants are sorted by hiring preferences, such as military spouse, veteran, or transition hiring preference, and must provide proof of any preference they claim by the closing date.

Experience: The Entry Level (CY 1 pay grade) needs no previous experience, but you must be at least 18, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and communicate well in English. Intermediate level requires 6 months of experience in a group program for children or youth, and Target level requires 12 months in a childcare or youth program plus knowledge of child or youth development.

Target level: 12 semester hours related to the age group served, or a Child Development Associate (CDA) or similar credential. Foreign education needs proof of U.S. equivalence, and U.S. schools must be accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accreditor.

  • Valid state driver's license, obtained and maintained

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 87 days (January 29, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume, supporting documents and questionnaire answers are compared against the minimum qualifications, then used to rate your experience. If you inflate your answers to meet requirements, you may lose consideration, and missing or incorrect items can affect your eligibility.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must clearly describe the experience you are claiming, with dates, since it is the main thing reviewers check.
  • Intermediate and Target applicants must upload supporting documents, such as transcripts or credentials, or they may be rated incomplete.
  • Your complete application, including the resume and required documents, must be submitted by 11:59 PM EST on 01/29/2027.
