Open to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Applicants are also sorted by hiring preferences, such as military spouse or veteran preference, and must submit proof of any preference they claim.

Experience: All levels require you to be at least 18, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and communicate well in English. Target Level needs 12 months of work in a childcare or youth program, plus knowledge of child and youth development theories. Intermediate Level needs 6 months of experience equivalent to the Entry Level (CY-01) working in a group program for children or youth. Entry Level requires no prior experience.

Education: This position allows education to substitute for experience. Target Level education options include a Child Development Associate (CDA) or similar credential, or at least 12 semester hours of coursework on the age group served from an accredited college. Intermediate Level education options include at least 6 semester hours in early childhood, elementary or secondary education, child and youth development, or special education, or industry childcare training that the agency accepts as equivalent. Foreign education must be shown to be equivalent to U.S. education.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Valid state driver's license, if you transport children in a government vehicle

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 138 days (March 22, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

Applications are reviewed every other Thursday after the opening date, and the posting will close early if all vacancies are filled before the closing date.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well your online questionnaire, resume, and supporting documents meet the qualifications. If your responses appear inflated compared with your documents, you may lose consideration, and missing or incomplete information may lower your rating or make your application incomplete.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • If you qualify through education, upload your transcripts, since the announcement says they are required in that case.
  • Describe your childcare or youth program work on your resume with dates and duties, since experience must be clearly shown.
  • Send proof for any hiring preference you claim, such as a DD-214, or your application may be marked incomplete.
