Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Preference groups listed include business-based action, military spouses, outside applicant veterans, spouses, widows, or parents of veterans, and transition hiring preference; you must prove any preference you claim by the closing date.

Experience: Entry level needs no previous experience. Intermediate level needs 6 months of experience equivalent to the CY-01 Entry Level working in a group program for children or youth. Target level needs 12 months of experience working in a childcare or youth program, plus knowledge of child and youth development theories. All levels require you to be at least 18, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and communicate well in English.

Education: Education can replace experience for this job. For intermediate level, 6 semester hours of college credit in early childhood, elementary or secondary education, child and youth development, or special education can qualify you. For target level, 12 semester hours of coursework directly related to the age group served, or a Child Development Associate (CDA) or similar nationally recognized credential, can qualify you. Schools must be accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accreditor, and foreign education must be shown to be equivalent to U.S. education.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes tomorrow (November 4, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers show you meet the qualifications. If your resume or documents do not match what you claimed in the questionnaire, you may lose consideration. An incomplete application package, with missing documents, will not be considered further.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Include dates and hours per week for any childcare or youth program experience on your resume, since the level you qualify for depends on it.
  • If you qualify through college credits, submit official transcripts from an accredited school, because they are required.
  • Upload proof of any preference you claim, such as a DD-214, before 11:59 PM Eastern on 11/04/2026, or your application will be incomplete.
