Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public but limited to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and those who owe allegiance to the U.S. Under the agency clarification, non-U.S. nationals may apply only if they lived in the U.S. or a U.S. territory for at least three continuous years right before federal service began and now live in Europe.

Experience: Entry level needs no work experience. Skill level (CY-01) needs at least 6 months working in group programs with children or youth, and Target level (CY-02) needs at least 12 months of that experience plus knowledge of child and youth development theories.

Education: Entry level needs a high school diploma or GED. Skill level needs completion of Entry Level DoW standardized training, equivalent industry training, or 6 semester hours of college credit in early childhood, elementary or secondary education, child and youth development, or special education. Target level needs completion of Skill Level DoW training, a Child Development Associate (CDA) or Military School-Age (MSA) credential, or 12 semester hours in related fields such as child development, human development, youth program administration, recreation for children and youth, physical education, or directly related behavioral sciences. General psychology or sociology courses do not count.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current CPR certification
  • Current First Aid certification

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 55 days (December 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application is first checked against the questionnaire, then HR reviews your resume, documents, and questionnaire answers together. If your questionnaire answers claim more experience than your resume shows, your consideration may be affected, and missing information or skipped steps may result in an ineligible rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Keep your resume to two pages or less and clearly show your relevant experience, skills, and abilities.
  • If you apply at Skill or Target level, upload college transcripts or certificates, since they may be required when you apply.
  • Education must come from schools accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to count.
