Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Preference categories include military spouses, veterans, and others, and you must submit proof of any preference you claim.

Experience: Entry level needs no experience. Intermediate level needs 6 months of experience equal to the CY-01 Entry Level working in a group program for children or youth. Target level needs 12 months of experience working in a childcare or youth program, plus knowledge of child and youth development theories. Intermediate and target applicants must send supporting documents.

Education: You must have a high school diploma or GED. Education can substitute for experience. Intermediate level can also qualify with 6 semester hours of college credit in early childhood, elementary or secondary education, child and youth development, or special education, or with an equivalent childcare certification. Target level can also qualify with 12 semester hours of coursework directly related to the age group served, or with a Child Development Associate (CDA) or similar nationally recognized credential. College must be accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized body. Foreign education must be shown to be equivalent to U.S. education.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 62 days (January 4, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your online questionnaire, resume, and supporting documents are checked against the qualifications. If you are minimally qualified, your resume is compared with your questionnaire answers to rate your experience. If the agency finds you overstated your experience, you may lose consideration, and incomplete packages are not considered.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Upload your transcripts, since the announcement lists them as required, even if you qualify mainly through experience
  • Make your resume clearly show childcare or youth program experience, including volunteer work
  • Send proof for any preference you claim, such as a DD-214 for veterans, by the closing date
