Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Applicants in priority groups, such as military spouses, outside applicant veterans, and transition hiring preference groups, may get preference, but they must claim and prove that eligibility by the closing date.

Experience: At the Entry Level, no experience is required. At the Intermediate Level, you need 6 months of experience equivalent to CY-01 Entry Level working in a group program for children or youth. At the Target Level, you need 12 months of experience in a childcare or youth program, plus knowledge of child or youth development theories and principles. All levels require you to be at least 18, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and communicate well in English.

Education: The announcement allows education to substitute for experience. Intermediate Level: 6 semester hours of college credit in early childhood, elementary or secondary education, child and youth development, or special education. Target Level: 12 semester hours of coursework directly related to the age group served, from an accredited college or university, or a nationally recognized child or youth development credential such as the Child Development Associate (CDA), or completion of DoW-approved training. Foreign education must be shown to be equivalent to U.S. education.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Food Handlers certification, completed within a set time after hire

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 87 days (January 29, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers are first checked for minimum qualifications. If you are minimally qualified, they are compared with your questionnaire answers to rate your experience. If the agency finds you overstated your qualifications, you may lose consideration, and missing information or errors may affect your eligibility.

Apply on USAJOBS ↗
4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Make sure your resume clearly describes relevant paid or unpaid experience, including volunteer work.
  • Upload proof of any claimed eligibility, such as DD-214 or proof of marriage, with your application.
  • If you qualify through education, upload transcripts from accredited schools, and include full contact information for 3 references.
