Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, national, or owe allegiance to the U.S. Applicants may be grouped by hiring preferences, such as military spouse, veteran, or transition hiring preference.

Experience: Entry level needs no previous experience. Intermediate level needs 6 months of experience equivalent to CY-01 Entry Level working in a group program for children or youth. Target level needs 12 months of experience in a childcare or youth program, plus knowledge of child and youth development theories.

Education: Education can replace experience for this job. For intermediate level, 6 semester hours of college credit in early childhood, elementary, or secondary education, child and youth development, or special education can qualify. For target level, a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or similar nationally recognized credential, or 12 semester hours of related coursework from an accredited college or university, can qualify. Foreign education must be shown to be equivalent to U.S. education.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 27 days (November 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

Applications are reviewed every two weeks starting September 15, 2026, and the announcement may close earlier than the final date. The page also lists review dates of 11/16 and 11/30.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume, supporting documents, and online questionnaire are checked against the qualifications. If you are minimally qualified, your answers are compared to your resume to judge your experience level. If you appear to have overstated your experience, you may lose consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must clearly describe your childcare or youth program experience, including dates and hours per week.
  • If you qualify through education, you must send transcripts from an accredited school.
  • Send proof for any hiring preference you claim, such as a DD-214 or marriage certificate, or your application will be incomplete.
