Who can apply: The public.

You must be a U.S. citizen. You must be a current USPHS Commissioned Corps officer or a USPHS Call to Active Duty (CAD) candidate, because civilians are not eligible.

Experience: You need at least three years of experience as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Clinical Psychologist. The work must be at the independent level, meaning no clinical supervision is required.

Education: For clinical social workers: a master's degree in Social Work (MSW) from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). For clinical psychologists: a PhD or PsyD in Clinical Psychology from an accredited program, with American Psychological Association accreditation preferred. Schools must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, unrestricted clinical social work license from a U.S. state, D.C., territory, or jurisdiction (or an unrestricted doctoral-level clinical psychologist license)
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers certification from the American Heart Association, maintained during employment
  • NASW Board Certification in Case Management and/or Case Manager Certification (CCM) from the Commission for Case Manager Certification, earned within 18 months of hire (clinical psychologists need CCM only)

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 333 days (September 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume and documents are reviewed to check that you meet the minimum qualifications. The best-qualified applicants are referred to the hiring manager, and an interview may be held at the hiring authority's discretion. Missing required information may result in an ineligible rating or a lower overall rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Include all USPHS documents, especially your three most recent COERs and Certificate of Investigation from your eOPF, because missing items can lower your rating.
  • Confirm your MSW is from a CSWE-accredited program and your clinical license is unrestricted and independent.
  • If you are a CAD candidate, state your location preference in your cover letter.
