Who can apply: The public.
The job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. The agency confirmed that applications are accepted from all U.S. citizens.
Experience: You need at least 4 years of relevant legal experience gained after law school, matching the CT-14 grade level. Relevant experience includes work as an attorney or law clerk, or other legal work done after law school. Work done before law school or while in law school does not count.
Education: You must have a full Juris Doctor (J.D.) law degree or equivalent from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA), and be an active member of a state bar in good standing. Foreign law degrees must be evaluated or fully credited as equivalent to a U.S. accredited program.
Licenses and certifications:
- Active state bar membership in good standing
- Certificate of Good Standing
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 44 days (December 18, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You will be rated eligible or ineligible based on your experience, education, bar membership, and desired qualifications. Eligible applicants are then reviewed by subject-matter experts. An incomplete application package, or a missing writing sample, can make you ineligible.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Submit the required writing sample with your application or you will be rated ineligible
- Keep your resume to two pages and show the dates and legal work that match the 4-year requirement
- Upload your law school transcript and Certificate of Good Standing, and attach DD-214 if you claim veterans' preference
