Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens may apply. The agency clarified that this means United States citizens.

Experience: For the GS-13 level, you need at least 1.5 years of professional experience after admission to the bar, one year of which must be specialized experience at the GS-12 level. For the GS-14 level, you need at least 2.5 years after bar admission, one year of which must be specialized experience at the GS-13 level. Specialized experience includes giving legal advice on grants or financial assistance programs and counseling program officials on the legal design, implementation, or enforcement of those programs.

Education: You must have a law degree (JD or LLB) from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA). You must also provide your transcript.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Good standing with the bar of a state, U.S. territory, District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes tomorrow (November 5, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Applicants are rated on how well they meet the qualifications and are placed in one of three groups: Best Qualified, Highly Qualified, or Qualified. Ratings are based on 12 skills, including attention to detail, decision making, and reasoning. If the agency finds you have overstated your experience, you may lose consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must explicitly show how you meet the specialized experience requirement, or you will be found ineligible.
  • List the month, day, and year and the hours per week for each job, or you may not get full credit.
  • Include your law school transcript, because the announcement says you must provide one.
