Who can apply: The public.

Open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. You must also be an active member in good standing of a state, territory, commonwealth, or D.C. bar.

Experience: You need 3 or more years of professional legal experience gained after you were admitted to the Bar. The experience must match the duties and responsibilities of a GS-14 attorney job.

Education: You must have a first professional law degree (LL.B. or J.D.) from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA). Foreign education must be evaluated by a recognized private organization or given full credit at a U.S. accredited school.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Active membership in good standing in the Bar of a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 10 days (November 13, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application is first checked for minimum qualifications, including education, bar membership, and experience. Qualified applicants are then rated on how well their resume and documents show skill in identifying legal issues, writing litigation reports and briefings, oral and written advocacy, and managing a heavy caseload.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Keep your resume to two pages or less, or you will be removed from consideration.
  • Upload your law school transcripts with your application, since they are required.
  • Make sure your bar certificate is dated within 3 months of your submission date, or the job may not accept it.
