Who can apply: The public.

Any U.S. citizen can apply, as can current and former federal employees with competitive or excepted status. Former Peace Corps members can apply only after five full years have passed since they left, and current ODNI Cadre employees must apply through JobsDNI.

Experience: You need at least 5 years of professional legal experience after passing the bar, which is required for the GS-15 level.

Education: You need a Doctor of Jurisprudence or Bachelor of Laws degree from an American Bar Association accredited law school, plus active membership in the bar of the highest court of a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. The announcement also lists a bachelor's degree under education.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Active membership in the bar of the highest court of a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or D.C.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 24 days (November 27, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

This job will close when 100 applications are received, which may be before the stated closing date.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, and the best-qualified candidates go to the hiring manager. The four essay answers are required but not scored, and resumes longer than two pages are removed from consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Sensitive Compartmented Information), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Write the four essay answers yourself, because you must certify that you did not use a consultant or AI.
  • Keep your resume to two pages and list the hours per week for each job, or it may be removed.
  • Apply through USAJOBS only, since emailed applications are not accepted.
