Assistant United States Attorney
Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys and the Office of the U.S. Attorneys · Department of Justice
This job in plain English
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, part of the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys, is hiring Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs), who are federal prosecutors. They lead investigations and trials of serious federal crimes in units such as Violent Crimes, Narcotics and Organized Crime, and white-collar units like Healthcare Fraud and Economic Crimes. This is an open continuous announcement, and travel of 25% or less may be expected.
Can you apply?
Yes, if you are a U.S. citizen: this job is open to everyone.
- Open to everyoneAny U.S. citizen or national can apply. Some jobs also accept non-citizens; the announcement says so.
The job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens or nationals may apply. Veterans' preference is considered as a positive factor in hiring.
What you would do
- Lead federal investigations and prosecutions of serious crimes.
- Build cases with federal agents, developing evidence and trial strategy.
- Stand in court and argue cases on behalf of the United States.
- Negotiate, litigate, and try cases that affect public safety.
Do you qualify for AD-21 (up to AD-28)?
With experience: You need at least 1 year of post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience, meaning work after law school. Three or more years of post-J.D. experience litigating cases, including discovery and trial, is described as ideal.
With education: You must have a J.D. (Juris Doctor) law degree from a school accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
Licenses and certifications you need:
- Active membership in the bar of any U.S. jurisdiction
How to apply well
What to send:
- Cover letter
- Resume, no more than 2 pages, showing month, day, and year for each job, hours per week if part-time, duties, and U.S. bar admissions
- Writing sample
- Proof of active bar membership
- Most recent SF-50 with salary, if you are a current federal employee
- Occupational questionnaire, completed during the online application
- For veterans' preference: DD 214 or other proof of eligibility, and SF 15 for 10-point preference
How you will be rated: Your application package is first checked to make sure all required items are included. An attorney interview panel then reviews qualified applicants and recommends who to interview; the occupational questionnaire takes about 20 minutes and missing information can lead to an ineligible rating.
Tips for this job:
- Keep your resume to 2 pages or less, because a longer resume makes you ineligible.
- List all U.S. bar admissions, active or inactive, and give full month, day, and year dates for each job.
- Attach proof of active bar membership and a writing sample, since both are required.
