Who can apply: Internal to an agency, The public.
Open to the public and to current permanent employees of VA Boston Healthcare System. You must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or owe allegiance to the U.S.
Experience: Your nursing experience is matched to a grade level, such as Nurse I, Level III or Nurse III. For example, a BSN plus 1 year of professional nursing equivalent to Nurse I, Level 2 qualifies for Nurse I, Level III. Experience is judged on five areas: practice, veteran and patient care, leadership, professional development, and evidence-based practice. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, counts. Preferred: placing PICC and midline catheters, and VA-BC (Vascular Access Board Certified) certification.
Education: A diploma, associate degree (ADN), bachelor's (BSN), or master's (MSN) in nursing can qualify you, depending on the grade level. Nursing school must be accredited by ACEN or CCNE. A master's degree in a related field with a BSN can also qualify at some levels. Foreign degrees need a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or DC
- 1 full and unrestricted nursing license from any U.S. state or territory
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 6 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your online questionnaire and documents. Your experience and documents will be verified, and missing or unclear information can lower your rating or make you ineligible. Reference checks may be done, and veterans are given preference when qualifications are about equal.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- If you are a current federal employee, send your most recent non-award SF-50 from this calendar year, since award SF-50s are not accepted.
- List month and year dates, and hours per week, for every job on your resume or CV, or your rating may suffer.
- The complete application package must be submitted by 11:59 PM ET on 11/09/2026, and missing documents can lead to an ineligible rating.
