Who can apply: The public.
U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. The agency says the job is open to current permanent VA employees, current permanent federal employees of other agencies, and all U.S. citizens.
Experience: Your experience is judged against the Nurse I, II, and III grade levels, and your education sets which level you can reach. For example, a BSN plus 2 years of professional nursing equivalent to Nurse I, Level 3 can qualify you for Nurse II, and an MSN plus 2 years of specialized nursing experience, one part at the Nurse II level, can qualify you for Nurse III.
Education: You must be a graduate of a professional nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE at the time you finished. A BSN or higher degree is preferred, and an MSN is needed for the Nurse III level. Schools must be accredited by a body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to count.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted RN registration in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents

3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 7 days (November 10, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
The job will close once 70 applications are received, which may happen before the closing date of 11:59 PM ET on 11/10/2026.
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications through an online questionnaire, and your application and documents are verified. Missing, unclear, or incomplete information can lead to an ineligible rating or a lower score, and your RN experience is also judged on five nursing dimensions: practice, veteran/patient-driven care, leadership, professional development, and evidence-based practice/research.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Be clear and specific about your experience, because the agency says it will not make assumptions.
- The 2-page resume limit does not apply to this job, but you must still submit a long-form resume or CV.
- Submit your full application and documents by 11:59 PM ET on 11/10/2026, and apply early because the job may close after 70 applications.
