Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Non-U.S. nationals may apply if they have lived in the U.S. or a U.S. territory for at least three continuous years before starting federal service. Candidates must also be in the area of consideration: Seymour Johnson AFB and a 50-mile radius, or meet one of the listed exceptions, such as being a military spouse relocating to the base.

Experience: No set number of years is stated. For NF-02, you need work experience doing animal care tasks, such as at a pet store, farm, or animal shelter, plus knowledge of approved animal restraint methods and safe vaccine and syringe handling. For NF-01, you need English communication skills and experience dealing with the public, such as babysitting or newspaper delivery.

Education: This job has no education requirement.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes tomorrow (November 4, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application is first checked automatically for basic qualifications, using your questionnaire answers, and then HR reviews your resume and documents. You are rated only on what your resume states, and missing questionnaire answers can make you ineligible.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must be two pages or less and must show specific animal care work, restraint experience, and vaccine or syringe handling for NF-02.
  • Answer every questionnaire question, since incomplete answers can make you ineligible.
  • Claim a preference only if you have proof, and upload the matching document such as a DD-214.
