Who can apply: The public.

Only current USPHS Commissioned Corps officers or USPHS Call to Active Duty (CAD) candidates can apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, and applicants without a USPHS commission must start the USPHS Commissioned Corps application process before applying here.

Experience: Experience must match the officer rank of the job. O-3 is for new graduates or those with no clinical experience. O-4 requires one year of clinical experience as a PA or NP, or current O-4 officer status. O-5 requires more than 4 years of full-time clinical experience as a PA or NP, or approval from the IHSC Medical Director, and team lead or supervisory experience.

Education: You must meet the minimum education and certification requirements for a physician assistant or a nurse practitioner. For a PA, this means an accredited bachelor's or master's degree, completion of an ARC-PA accredited training program, and NCCPA national certification. For an NP, this means a certified advanced practice nurse degree from an approved program and national board certification through AANP or ANCC.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Unrestricted PA or NP state license (NP must be Family or Adult-Gerontology)
  • National board certification: NCCPA for PAs, or AANP or ANCC for NPs
  • DEA registration to prescribe controlled medications, if applicable
  • Current CPR/BLS certification

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 330 days (September 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume and supporting documents will be reviewed to check that you meet the minimum qualifications. You may be selected for an interview at the hiring authority's discretion, and missing required information may result in an ineligible rating or a lower overall rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • If you are not a USPHS officer yet, start the USPHS Commissioned Corps application at usphs.gov before applying here.
  • Only list degrees and programs from schools accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting body.
  • Send all required USPHS documents, including the three most recent COERs and your Certificate of Investigation from eOPF, or the rating may be affected.
