Who can apply: The public.
The announcement says it is open to the public, but the qualifications section says only U.S. citizens may apply. You must prove U.S. citizenship.
Experience: You need one or more full years of professional nursing experience at the GS-11 level (GS-0610-11). It must include taking health histories, prescribing medicines and explaining lab and test results for patients age 50 and older. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, can count.
Education: You need a graduate or higher degree from an accredited advanced nurse practitioner program. Foreign nursing degrees need certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current, active, full and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico or a U.S. territory
- Passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)
- License or registration in Family Practice Nurse Practitioner or a related specialty
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 7 days (November 10, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your application is rated on how well you meet the qualifications, using your resume, online questionnaire answers and supporting documents. Missing documents or incomplete information can make you ineligible, and inflated qualifications can cause you to lose consideration.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must be two pages or less and must show hours per week for each job.
- Upload a copy of your nursing license or certification, or you will be rated ineligible.
- Experience alone counts for this job, so make your resume describe your patient care work in detail.
